RULES OF ETIQUETTE (DECENT BEHAVIOUR)



What is Etiquette?

Etiquette simply means a set of rules of good manners and decent behaviours, which enable individual, imbibe certain attributes that will make everyone around him or her feel comfortable, happy and welcome. In turn, a decently behaved individual earns for himself or herself admiration and respect from the society.

Study and carefully observe the following DOs and DON’Ts. They will guide you to be of good behaviour.

1) DO; remember that the first rule of etiquette is ‘respect yourself’

2) DO; remember that the second rule of etiquette and life ‘respect other people’ especially the elderly ones’.

3) DON’T give somebody and ugly look when he or she comes visiting as if you hate the person, even if you don’t like his or her face.

4) DON’T sneeze noisily when you are in the midst of people or cough in such a way that will cause embarrassment or attract undue attention to yourself.

5) DO; cover your mouth and nostrils with handkerchief whenever you sneeze or cough in the midst of people.

6) DON’T stretch your hand to a woman (if you are male) for a handshake unless she is a younger relation of yours or junior in school.

7) DO; receive the handshake of your boss or senior colleague or an elderly person or someone of higher status in the society or in school than yourself with a bow.

8) DON’T read another person’s letter, however intimate your relation is, unless you are permitted by the owner to do so.

9) DON’T open another person’s diary to read the contents for whatever reason.

10) DON’T wear the football jersey outside the playing arena.

11) DON’T wear the swimming suit (trunks or bikini) outside the swimming arena.

12) DON’T wear any dress that will not completely or sufficiently cover your underwear (singlet, pant, underskirt, etc).

13) DON’T clean your nostrils or ear-holes in the public. Do it in a confinement that is out of sight of anyone else.

14) DON’T make your under-pants visible above the band of your pair of trousers or knickers. Sagging fashion is bad dressing.

15) DON’T fail to put on underwear at all times because you can get your dress torn or made to fall off or get pulled off your body at any time.

16) DON’T wear T-shirts that have offensive inscriptions on them.

17) DON’T yawn noisily with your mouth wide open in public because nobody is interested in the numbers, size,colour, or arrangement of your teeth.

18) DON’T use a spoon to drink tea, while entertaining guests. don’t fill a glass to the brim .

19) DON’T as a female, tie wrapper around your chest without a top within or outside your house. This is quite primitive.

20) DON’T wear clothes that are not freshly washed and ironed. People who wear any dress that is torn, stained, or tattered are believed to be careless, carefree, and cannot be trusted.
